March favourites!

Eeeekkk it’s been ages since I’ve done one of these posts, but I’ve really been loving the following products, so I just wanted to give them a well deserved shout out!

Nose Pore Strips (RSP R29,99)

After I took the combined favourite pictures, I couldn’t wait to use my last pore strip. I opened the pack and realised it was the charcoal one (as it says on the outside…Oi), so it’s the wrong pore strip in the top picture. Damn you cosmetic people for putting them all in shiny silver packaging! This charcoal one is great, but it has ripped my skin at the tips of my nostrils and it burns for a good 2 days thereafter. I’ve tried it about 3 times and each time is the same. So I discovered the Skin Strategy ones from Dischem (2nd picture above) and they are great. They work well, no ripping off of my skin or burning and they are the cheapest I’ve found! 10 strips for 30 bucks? Bargain of note! PS Am I the only one that is intrigued after using a pore strip? Every. Single. Time. Like I want to frame it….so gross I know. lol

Urban Decay Blackmail Vice Lipstick Palette (RSP R700)

This is literally my 4th child. Look at that colour selection ❤ Every single time I have done my makeup in the 2 months since receiving this, I have used it. This is one of the best purchases I have made makeup wise. I love mixing the colours and I find I’ve become bolder in terms of the colours I use on my lips. Usually I’m a nude lipstick kinda gal, but I’ve definitely been rocking pink and burgundy lips lately. Go me!

The brush it comes with is also excellent and offers precision for applying your lipstick. Also the mirror in this palette is amazing! I always wondered why YouTubers say: it has a good mirror. Now I know.

Okay, the bad news? This was a limited edition item, so I don’t think you can get it anymore. I am ETERNALLY grateful for an online friend that bought this when she spotted it as she knew how badly I wanted it and couriered it to PE for me. I paid for it, but I mean, it was a lot of effort on her part for somebody she’s never met ❤

Vichy Ideal Soleil Mattifying Corrective Care SPF 30 (RSP R285)

I recently wrote about 2 Vichy products here, where I confessed to having never used Vichy products before. This cream really impressed me as it’s non greasy, but provides hydration and has SPF 30 in it. I never wear anything with SPF on my face as I find it too greasy, but this is an ‘easy’ cream for my oily face. Also this mattifies the skin and I find it reduces the appearance of my pores.

The Vitamin C Glow Revealing Liquid Peel (RSP R170)

Last week I gushed about how fabulous this peel is, so it comes as no surprise that it’s included in my favourites and you can read more about it here.

Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm Peach Kiss (RSP R47,95)

This is a tinted lipbalm, but I find it so moisurising on my lips and I love the subtle peach glossy sheen it provides to my lips. With some mascara and just this lipbalm, I feel like a million bucks 😉 I have about 3 of these floating around everywhere at home and in my bag.

Vichy Normaderm Cleansing Mattifying Foam (RSP R190)

I was so happy with the Vichy products I was using, that I went out and bought 2 of these cleansers and another product at the current Clicks Autumn Beauty Fair. This cleanser foams so nicely! You just need half a pump, maybe even less if your face isn’t as huge as mine and you cleanse away. The foam doesn’t disappear which I love. You can see it and feel it on your skin. It mattifies my skin without leaving my skin feeling dry at all. I’ve noticed breakout spots don’t stay around for long since I’ve started using the Normaderm range. I am so glad I went with my gut and got 2 of these even though I hadn’t tried it before.

Rimmel Brow This Way Argan Brow Gel Clear (RSP R89,95)

I bought this literally the day before the 3 for 2 promo started at Clicks. That’s what happens when you sneakily buy makeup while your husband is in Spar. #Karma. So bummed when I miss a 3 for 2 promo. Moving on…..

This gel is really nice and I like that it’s infused with argan oil. My brows are not crunchy or hard, they stay in place, but they are natural looking. I also love the brush on the wand. It’s small and precise for easy application of gel onto your brows.

My only con on this would be that it’s a bit pricey for ‘drugstore’ considering it’s only 5mls of product, vs half the price for 8.5mls of another brand. I’ll see how long it lasts me and then I’ll decide if it’s a deal breaker for a repurchase. These come in a few shade options as well.

That’s it for my March favourites! Have you tried any of these? What have you been loving lately in terms of skin care or makeup products?

My top picks of 2016

Every beauty blogger and their cousin by now has uploaded a video or post with their ‘Best of Beauty 2016’, so I’m a bit late on the bus, but we’ll still get to the same destination….right?  Today I want to just share what some of my all time favourite products to use in 2016 were. I’ll try not to make this too long and will go in order of makeup application.

Best of Beauty 2016

Primer – My ride or die will always be the Benefit Porefessional pro balm. It’s glides onto my skin and fills my pores. The balm also mattifies my oily bits which I love. I’ve yet to find another primer that can compare to this one.

Foundation – I have’t used many different foundations as I’ve found 1 that you’ve seen on the blog before, the L’Oreal Infallible 24hr Matte foundation. I’m in the shade Golden Beige, though I think that’s my winter shade and I should try one shade darker now in Summer. This gives me a medium coverage with 1 layer and looks very natural on my skin, so much so that people sometimes don’t believe I’m wearing foundation. This foundation is for somebody with oily skin though, or it may look a little dry, but a good mist of setting spray can help with that. (Available at Dischem )

Face powder – After seeing a few good reviews, I got the Yardley loose translucent powder and I really like it. It’s very finely milled and it doesn’t crease my under eye area like other powders do. (Available at Clicks or Dischem)

Under eye concealer – I’ve seen many reviews on the Maybelline Age rewind concealer and I was praying it would come to South Africa, but it hasn’t. Thankfully I have a lovely cousin in the UK that said I could order goodies and when she comes to SA she’d bring it with her. I love this concealer. It’s not thick and it blends so well. My only issue is that I think the shade I got is a smidge too light for me, so I usually mix it with my other favourite concealer, from LA Girl (Pro HD concealer) that is a bit darker. (Available from Superdrug in the UK)

Eyehsadow primer – I loved the eyeshadow base from Essence. It’s affordable and it does the job.(Available at Clicks or Dischem)

Eyeshadow palette – This is a tough one as I love all of my palettes more than the next one at some point in time. Only because this was a dream come true, the Chocolate Bar palette from Too Faced has got to be my favourite palette for 2016. The shade selection is great and the quality of the eye shadow is amazing. I’ve said it in a previous post, there’s something in this palette for every type of gal…the ordinary gal and the glam gal ❤

Brow Pencil – I love the MAC brow pencils. They are creamy and blend in really well. Easy to smudge or wipe off if you need to fix a mistake. I just feel it gives such a natural fill to the brows. I wear the shade ‘Spiked’.

Mascara – There is a clear winner for me, and that is the Benefit Roller Lash mascara. The Roller Lash doesn’t clump, it seperates and lengthens your lashes. It’s just the perfect formula and I will repurchase it over and over.

Blush – Again there is no other contender in this category for me, it’s the Benefit Dallas face powder. (I seem to have a little bit of a crush on Benefit products don’t I?) A bit of a blush/bronzer hybrid, but I just love the flush of colour it gives, with no shimmer and I think it just goes with every single makeup look. I don’t even have to think about it.

Highlighter – This one is difficult. I don’t think I’ve found THE HIGHLIGHTER yet that rocks my world. I was obsessed with my Colourpop one in the shade ‘Lunch money‘. Today I’m in love with the one from my NYX palette called ‘Ice Queen‘. So in 2016 I basically just grabbed whatever was close by…I love all my highlighters on different days.

Lip pencilsEssence lip pencils are my go too pencils in any shade. They are affordable and come in an array of colours. I don’t think they’re the most long wearing lip pencils out there, but I’m not too fussy about that. (Available at Clicks or Dischem)

Setting spray – My vote goes for the Me & Youth beauty spray (previously known as Beauty Fix). The ingredients, the lovely rose scent and the dewy look it gives my foundation just makes this a clear winner in my books. Apologies as I seem to have not included a picture of the new bottle and I don’t want to show a picture of the old packaging. Oi.  (Available on the Me&Youth website)

Lipstick – I’m not a big lipstick lover. I’m more a lipliner and gloss kind of gal. My most worn lipstick in winter was definitely from Gosh in the colour ‘Antique‘. Also a reached for lipstick was from Mac in the shade ‘Modesty‘. (Available at Edgars Stores)

Lipgloss – Another winner from Essence, but sadly this gloss was part of the limited edition ‘All that Greys’ launch and mine is basically finished, so I have no idea what I’m going to do 😦 It’s a nudey pink gloss and paired over a plum lipliner is just amazing! Also paired with grey eyeshadow, it’s simply stunning. The scent is also really lovely. (Limited edition, so not available anymore)

Hair – I discovered quite a few brands in 2016 and a brand called NAK definitely was the best shampoo and conditioner that I used. It left my hair feeling so clean, nourished and shiny, without it being oily. On the budget side, Aunt Jackie’s range from Clicks is a brand I fell in love with, especially for coloured gals with flyaway hair or knotty hair. The range is affordable and even has a flaxseed oil infused hair gel so it isn’t harsh or drying on the hair. (Available from RetailBox)

That concludes my ‘Best of 2016’ picks! I hope you enjoyed reading it and perhaps we loved some of the same things, or you’ve spotted something you’d like to try? Also if there was something you could not live without in 2016, please let me know below in the comments so I can look out for it ❤

PS I have NO idea why the quality of my picture is so bad. It’s fine until I upload it here. I haven’t had this issue before 😦 If anybody has advice, leave me a comment down below. I’ll try to play around with it and update the post.

July Favourites

I can’t even believe it’s August already!! I so wasn’t ready for this post…. I grabbed my faves yesterday morning. I do all my stellar photography in my office….I literally took one shot of each item and that was that. Anybody that has a blog knows usually you take 100 pics of each item for that perfect shot, but I was like…oh no, it ain’t going to happen this month. Though truthfully I’m sure all my pictures look like I only took one shot and didn’t care how it turned out. ha ha

So let’s start this shall we?

First up is this large fan brush that I got in a brush set I purchased on eBay a few months back. I’ve always wanted a large fan brush and I am quite happy with this. This was a set of 18 brushes for a whopping $12 about, with free delivery to my door (Seriously!) and it came in a lovely brush holder bag, so just to have even 5 brushes in the set that I use daily is a score. This is my favourite in the set. It picks up product without much effort and for my highlight, it packs a punch.

My MAC brow pencil in ‘Spiked’ (RSP R210) is next. I had finished my previous MAC pencil quite a while back. I was waiting for NYX to get some stock in as I’ve read their brow pencil is quite good, but eventually I couldn’t wait anymore. MY only issue with my previous pencil was that the girl sold me the shade ‘Lingering’ and to me it was just too light. Thankfully a different girl was there on the day and she was shocked that I had previously used Lingering, she recommended ‘Spiked’ and I think it’s the perfect colour for me.

These MAC pencils glide on and fill in any patches you may have. Also if you make a mistake, it wipes away very easily. I love my brow mascaras, but if you have patchy brows, a pencil is a must have in my books.

Remember, any empty MAC container/pencil/bottle should be kept until you have 5 empties and you’ll receive a free lipstick when you take your empties to the store. Recycling, free make up….a win win situation ❤

For my face, I’ve been loving The Porefessional Pro Balm from Benefit (RSP R445). Let me start by saying, that before I started following blogs, I had no idea there was ANYTHING wrong with my pores. I have skin on my face. Sometimes they had pimples…that’s a problem…my pores however never got a second thought. Even initially it didn’t sink in when listening to bloggers go on about pores….and then one day you notice that you have volcano crates for pores and there’s no going back!

So now that we have our back story, I can tell you that this balm promises to minimize the appearance of your pores and it lives up to it’s promise. I dab this on those problem pores (I can’t even deal with this crap) and I see a big difference, as if it fills up my pores? It’s great stuff and I just repurchased the full size after trying a trial size previously.

I recently noticed I have pores on my forehead…..*shakes head* #CantDeal

Benefit is available to us in PE only from Red Square Beauty online.

If you know me personally, you know that I LOVE to do my nails. It’s my therapy, my me time….and the more glitter and colours, the better. I got into nail art after binge watching videos from Hayls World. She just makes it look so easy, and with 3 kids, I don’t have time for complicated…..

I’m pretty sure I bought this shade as one of my first nail polish purchases ever. My daughter and her bestie were going to town with my nail polish one day and I never saw this one again despite rummaging through the toy box where I salvaged a few others. I stumbled upon it in Dischem recently and the memories came flooding back….and I had to get it again.

This is by Essie (RSP R115) and it’s in the colour ‘Eternal Optimist’ (144). It’s such a beautiful colour for all year round I think. I love my pink nail polish and this is a beautiful dusty pink, so perfect for Winter when my sister thinks my shocking pink nails are inappropriate. The colour is quite opaque and 2 coats is all you need. I love the colour selection from Essie, my only gripe is that I wish the brush was a bit thicker. I just feel the brush is way too thin for me personally.

So when I’m doing my nails, I find I always have an itch at the most inopportune times, I need to scratch my head, I need the loo….something needs to be done, and you know those nails are nowhere near ready for the real world! That’s where this Revlon 60 second Quick Dry Spray (RSP R120) comes in handy. I love this stuff. I wouldn’t exactly go and dig for gold after spraying my nails, but it gives me more peace of mind than any other nail drying drops or spray I’ve used. What’s great is that is sprays in timed bursts for each nail, so you can’t waste much….if that makes sense.

Essie and Revlon are available from Dischem.

You know we don’t end a favourite post around here without an ode to chocolate…. This month it’s from Lindt and it’s the Sweet Popcorn slab. When I saw this at Woolworths and Spar I said to my husband: ‘Who on earth would pair chocolate with popcorn?? It makes no sense!’ Um….yes it does Simone…yes it does. I grabbed you and I loved you sweet popcorn slab ❤ I actually wouldn’t mind a bit more popcorn in this slab to be honest, but it’s just a great combination. Crunchy and smooth….hmmmmm….

Have you tried anything on my list? What are your current favourite products (or chocolates)?

June Favourites

When I saw a blogger posting her June Favourites on Friday I was thinking, um somebody’s early…….then it hit me, nope, it really is already July and June is finished, kaput, gone! How insane is that?? I had to scramble a bit to narrow down my June favorites, but I think this is a fair representation of the items I reached for most days.

Stila’s Eyes are the Window palette – Spirit

This was probably my first eye-shadow palette and I must say I was smitten at first swatch! I know, my palette looks VERY sad…. We need a moment of silence for Kitten *sobs*, Oasis and Pewter. 😦 Kitten was the most devastating loss.

Okay, moving on, what I love about this palette is it has a nice mix of matt shades, shimmer shades, light shades and dark shades. You can use this for a daytime look, all the way through to a dramatic nighttime look. It’s really versatile and the perfect starter palette for any makeup lover. The powders are all soft and very pigmented with very little, if any, fallout! Money well spent. I’ve reached for this palette a lot this month and will continue to use it until my kids smash the crap out of the rest of the colours.

Kalahari had these at 50% off at one stage….I really wish I’d gotten all of the palettes at that stage. Stila is available at Woolworths and at the time I paid R495,00 for this palette.

Essence’s 2 in 1 shadow and liner in She’s got the mauve (06)

I absolutely love these shadow sticks from Essence. The quality of this stick for the price is so amazing. It’s a stunning shimmery mauve colour and dual purpose. You can use it as an eye-shadow or a liner. It’s waterproof….I swear this stuff doesn’t budge unless you remove it forcefully from your eyes (in a good way).

These sticks are available in 6 shades from Dischem and retail for about R59,95 each.

Benefit’s Roller Lash Mascara

I feel like such a broken record, but I’m a huge Benefit fan. I ordered this as one of the first items from Benefit and I was not disappointed. The brush is plastic and has this ‘Hook ‘n’ Roll’ capability that separates, lifts and curls your lashes. You can honestly feel it ‘hooking’ every single lash and you’ll be thinking: Wow are those all my lashes? I can’t gush about this enough, it really is one of my top 3 mascaras and I will definitely be repurchasing it. It’s perfect for day wear to the office, or you amp it up and apply 2 or 3 coats for evening wear.

One last comment about these, you can apply numerous coats and I don’t find it to go clumpy at all like some other mascaras get after more than 1 or 2 coats.

Benefit products are available online at Red Square.

Wet n Wild’s megaclear brow and lash mascara

Prior to discovering this brow ‘mascara’, I was using a similar brand’s products. While I usually love the brand, I just felt the gel was really not holding my unruly brows in place, and then I discovered this Wet n Wild one. For the price, I think it does a really good job of holding my brows in place and I even use it for that unruly hair that doesn’t want to just relax and go behind the ear…grrr

Wet n Wild products are available at Clicks and this gel was around R34,95 if I’m not mistaken.

Essence lip liner in ‘In the Nude’ (11)

Yes Simone, stop with the Essence gushing already…. I can’t help it. It’s amazing to me that you can have a brand be so affordable with so many great products. I have a few of these lip liners and this is I think my favourite one. It really is soft and glides on like a dream. I have a lipliner costing 5 times this and it’s so harsh on application, so I really really do love these liners from Essence. There are about 8 shades, including a transparent one that I assume is a universal ‘don’t worry about the colour you’re putting on your lips’ sort of situation. Essence has launched a new range of lipliners that I have read rave reviews about, but after searching high and low in Port Elizabeth, I’ve given up the search. If any PE gals have seen it, please let me know below.

Essence lipliners are available at Clicks and Dischem and retail for R18,95 each.

Kardashian Beauty Take 2 Dry Conditioner

When I first received these in one of my secret boxes from RetailBox, I was so disappointed. What would I do with such overpriced products? Dry shampoo and even worse…dry conditioner? What is that even??? I didn’t want it to go to waste so I thought my 7yr old could spray it on before swimming classes as perhaps a ‘protector’ from the chemicals, but that still made me sad thinking of the price tag attached to these.

One day I washed my hair and just shampoo’d it, and had no intention of blow drying it so I whipped this out, sprayed my hair and put it in a bun. The next morning my hair was so soft and curly that I absolutely loved the effect. I was traumatised when I flat ironed all those soft curls away. What Retail Box says about this product:

A lightweight conditioning spray that revives dull or dry hair by enhancing shine and moisture in between styles. This moisturizing formula contains small conditioning molecules that instantly hydrate hair, leaving it incredibly soft and smooth. Nourishing Black Seed Oil provides added radiance for the ultimate glamorous finish.

The smell of this is divine and I’m sure it’s the black seed oil that contributes to leaving my hair feeling so soft and nourished. That being said, despite how much I like this product, at R395 from RetailBox, I just cannot justify spending that money on a Dry Conditioner 😦 Getting to try it out though as a fraction of the cost due to the Secret Box again hits home what I love about the Secret Box. Read about the Secret Box here.

Lindie’s homemade Rubies

Well I warned you that I love chocolate….so I have to share my chocolate love of the month with you ❤ I was not a fan of the original brownies and blondies from Lindies, but on a whim I decided to try these Rubies. They are the latest offering from Lindies, and are Red Velvet Brownies. Yes you heard right, RED VELVET CHOCOLATE BROWNIES! I was always going to be all over that like white on rice! I love them with a big glass of milk….. I’m never going to be skinny….*sigh*

These are available at Spar and retail for R34,99 for a box of 4.

Here are some swatches of 2 of the Essence products.

From left: Essence 2 in 1 shadow stick in ‘She’s got the mauve’, Essence lipliner in ‘In the Nude’

Hope you enjoyed reading about my June favourites 🙂 Let me know in the comments below what you loved in June and also are these posts too long, too many pictures, too many words? I’d appreciate the feedback.

Until next time. xxxxx
