#RBSecretBox 33 {Unboxing}

If you follow my blog, you’ll know that I love surprise boxes and the one from Retail Box features regularly as a must have for me. If you’d like to check out previous boxes, check out this post or this one.

This month was a whopper of a box…in size and price. ha ha

The box was a bit pricier than usual, but I knew it had to mean we were getting some really good products….and after the brand reveal…I knew I had to have it. So let’s dig in!

Moroccanoil Repair Shampoo and Conditioner – 500mls each (RSP R1 230)

The Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner Duo will help to nourish, soften and hydrate your hair. Ideal for dry, damaged and chemically treated locks, these ultra-nourishing products work together to infuse your hair with intense moisture and hydration, leaving it soft, supple and manageable. –Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo 500ml: Enriched with argan oil, keratin, fatty acids and proteins, it gently cleanses your hair to leave it soft, shiny and full of bounce. –Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Conditioner 500ml: Formulated with the same ingredients as the matching shampoo, it gently de-tangles and reconstructs your hair to get it back in prime condition. Rich and luxurious, your hair will be left wonderfully soft and easy to manage.

Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong – 75mls (sample size worth R85)

Moroccanoil extra strong, finishing hairspray provides long-lasting hold for the most demanding hairstyles. Moroccanoil® Luminous Hairspray Extra Strong is the ultimate setting hairspray that secures special-event styles: from sleek ponytails to chignons to red-carpet looks. This high-performance, argan oil-infused extra hold formula veils hair in a reflective shield of shine that fights humidity and frizz, yet brushes out easily and leaves no sticky residue.

Moroccanoil Oil Treatment for all hair types & fine hair – 5mls each (sample size worth around R27 each)

Moroccanoil Oil Treatment is an ultra-light formula which is absorbed by the hair instantly, resulting in a natural, silky finish and brilliant shine without leaving a residue.

Also in the box was a cute thick plastic sort of beach bag. I think it would be nice to store your hair tools in (flat irons, blow drier, etc) and brushes or to use as a shopping bag for your toiletries. Let’s value the bag at around R50, so that brings the total of this box to around R1 419 and the box cost R495. That’s quite a bargain for top quality hair products.

One of my absolute favourite Morrocanoil products is the heat protection spray (not included in this box). It’s unrivaled in terms of the shine, scent and the smooth finish it gives my hair.

Lastly, because you have to spend over R500 to qualify for free shipping (sneaky Retail box with that 5 bucks), I threw in this pack of invisi bobbles that was on sale for R40.

My order was placed on Thursday and it was delivered by Monday morning. The customer service at Retail Box is really great and it’s one of my favourite online shopping spots.

All in all this was a fabulous purchase. There are still some boxes left if you want to grab one over here. Did you get yourself one of these boxes?

{Review} John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Range

About 2 months ago, Rubybox invited all their Ruby gals to apply to test some products from the John Frieda hair care range as part of their #BrilliantBrunette campaign.  I was lucky enough to be selected to test out the products and I received the Visibly Deeper shampoo and conditioner to try out.

Note – I don’t know why my picture quality gets so bad when I upload to a blog post. If anybody has any ideas, please leave comments/suggestions below.

The packaging is this really vibrant chocolate brown tube and it’s 250ml of product per tube. The promise is to intensify deep, rich, lustrous tones while hydrating your hair. The visibly deeper range is also formulated with cocoa and evening primrose oil.

The shampoo is a gorgeous glistening chocolate brown colour and the scent is amazing. It’s just so pleasant to look at and smell. I literally want to bath in it. I usually take a few seconds in the shower to just stare at the shampoo in my hands. True story. The shampoo foams nicely, which I love to just make me feel like my hair is getting a deep clean. It also doesn’t leave my hair with that ‘stripped’ feeling as some shampoos do.

The conditioner is not the same colour as the shampoo, a bit lighter and a different texture, but that same amazing smell. This conditioner is really moisturising and hydrating to my hair and it is very needed as my hair is quite damaged at the moment. It feels like I haven’t rinsed the conditioner off properly, that’s how soft and silky my hair feels after I’ve rinsed it. Properly.

When I dry my hair I do feel that it is slightly oily? I don’t think oily is the right term, but then the next morning my hair is silky smooth with no trace of excess oil. I’m not sure if this just happens with my hair….but I find it intriguing.

I’ve been using this now for around 2 months and I would always describe my hair as dull and mousy brown. A few days ago I was looking in the mirror and I realised that my hair was actually so vibrant and a darker chocolate brown! I’m not claiming you can ditch the hair dye and this will change your hair colour immediately, but over time I definitely feel this is a lovely product to have, especially if you’re like me who never gets a chance to dye her hair. #MomLife and all you know?

The John Frieda range is available in many variants and is currently on promotion at Clicks. The shampoo and conditioner retail for R119 each.

I’ll post before and after pictures of my hair on social media as soon as I can get my hair into selfie mode. #MomLife and all…… ha ha

Have you tried anything in the John Frieda range before?

PS It really benefits you to be a Rubybox member as you can see, so definitely sign up so you too can try some of their products in future campaigns ❤

My top picks of 2016

Every beauty blogger and their cousin by now has uploaded a video or post with their ‘Best of Beauty 2016’, so I’m a bit late on the bus, but we’ll still get to the same destination….right?  Today I want to just share what some of my all time favourite products to use in 2016 were. I’ll try not to make this too long and will go in order of makeup application.

Best of Beauty 2016

Primer – My ride or die will always be the Benefit Porefessional pro balm. It’s glides onto my skin and fills my pores. The balm also mattifies my oily bits which I love. I’ve yet to find another primer that can compare to this one.

Foundation – I have’t used many different foundations as I’ve found 1 that you’ve seen on the blog before, the L’Oreal Infallible 24hr Matte foundation. I’m in the shade Golden Beige, though I think that’s my winter shade and I should try one shade darker now in Summer. This gives me a medium coverage with 1 layer and looks very natural on my skin, so much so that people sometimes don’t believe I’m wearing foundation. This foundation is for somebody with oily skin though, or it may look a little dry, but a good mist of setting spray can help with that. (Available at Dischem )

Face powder – After seeing a few good reviews, I got the Yardley loose translucent powder and I really like it. It’s very finely milled and it doesn’t crease my under eye area like other powders do. (Available at Clicks or Dischem)

Under eye concealer – I’ve seen many reviews on the Maybelline Age rewind concealer and I was praying it would come to South Africa, but it hasn’t. Thankfully I have a lovely cousin in the UK that said I could order goodies and when she comes to SA she’d bring it with her. I love this concealer. It’s not thick and it blends so well. My only issue is that I think the shade I got is a smidge too light for me, so I usually mix it with my other favourite concealer, from LA Girl (Pro HD concealer) that is a bit darker. (Available from Superdrug in the UK)

Eyehsadow primer – I loved the eyeshadow base from Essence. It’s affordable and it does the job.(Available at Clicks or Dischem)

Eyeshadow palette – This is a tough one as I love all of my palettes more than the next one at some point in time. Only because this was a dream come true, the Chocolate Bar palette from Too Faced has got to be my favourite palette for 2016. The shade selection is great and the quality of the eye shadow is amazing. I’ve said it in a previous post, there’s something in this palette for every type of gal…the ordinary gal and the glam gal ❤

Brow Pencil – I love the MAC brow pencils. They are creamy and blend in really well. Easy to smudge or wipe off if you need to fix a mistake. I just feel it gives such a natural fill to the brows. I wear the shade ‘Spiked’.

Mascara – There is a clear winner for me, and that is the Benefit Roller Lash mascara. The Roller Lash doesn’t clump, it seperates and lengthens your lashes. It’s just the perfect formula and I will repurchase it over and over.

Blush – Again there is no other contender in this category for me, it’s the Benefit Dallas face powder. (I seem to have a little bit of a crush on Benefit products don’t I?) A bit of a blush/bronzer hybrid, but I just love the flush of colour it gives, with no shimmer and I think it just goes with every single makeup look. I don’t even have to think about it.

Highlighter – This one is difficult. I don’t think I’ve found THE HIGHLIGHTER yet that rocks my world. I was obsessed with my Colourpop one in the shade ‘Lunch money‘. Today I’m in love with the one from my NYX palette called ‘Ice Queen‘. So in 2016 I basically just grabbed whatever was close by…I love all my highlighters on different days.

Lip pencilsEssence lip pencils are my go too pencils in any shade. They are affordable and come in an array of colours. I don’t think they’re the most long wearing lip pencils out there, but I’m not too fussy about that. (Available at Clicks or Dischem)

Setting spray – My vote goes for the Me & Youth beauty spray (previously known as Beauty Fix). The ingredients, the lovely rose scent and the dewy look it gives my foundation just makes this a clear winner in my books. Apologies as I seem to have not included a picture of the new bottle and I don’t want to show a picture of the old packaging. Oi.  (Available on the Me&Youth website)

Lipstick – I’m not a big lipstick lover. I’m more a lipliner and gloss kind of gal. My most worn lipstick in winter was definitely from Gosh in the colour ‘Antique‘. Also a reached for lipstick was from Mac in the shade ‘Modesty‘. (Available at Edgars Stores)

Lipgloss – Another winner from Essence, but sadly this gloss was part of the limited edition ‘All that Greys’ launch and mine is basically finished, so I have no idea what I’m going to do 😦 It’s a nudey pink gloss and paired over a plum lipliner is just amazing! Also paired with grey eyeshadow, it’s simply stunning. The scent is also really lovely. (Limited edition, so not available anymore)

Hair – I discovered quite a few brands in 2016 and a brand called NAK definitely was the best shampoo and conditioner that I used. It left my hair feeling so clean, nourished and shiny, without it being oily. On the budget side, Aunt Jackie’s range from Clicks is a brand I fell in love with, especially for coloured gals with flyaway hair or knotty hair. The range is affordable and even has a flaxseed oil infused hair gel so it isn’t harsh or drying on the hair. (Available from RetailBox)

That concludes my ‘Best of 2016’ picks! I hope you enjoyed reading it and perhaps we loved some of the same things, or you’ve spotted something you’d like to try? Also if there was something you could not live without in 2016, please let me know below in the comments so I can look out for it ❤

PS I have NO idea why the quality of my picture is so bad. It’s fine until I upload it here. I haven’t had this issue before 😦 If anybody has advice, leave me a comment down below. I’ll try to play around with it and update the post.

#RBSecret Box 30 {Unboxing}

Yes it’s that time again, another secret box has been released, though by the time this is posted, box number 31 would also have been released.

If you’ve read my blog before, you know these feature every so often. I always try to get my hands on a box as I believe they’re amazing value for money. When this one hit the www though, I was a little bit strapped for cash so opted against it. I was then informed by a friend that she had actually purchased one for me as a gift and to say I was appreciative and thrilled is an understatement!! Thanks so much for this gift Miss J ❤

The box retailed at R300 and the hint for the box said: Moisturise and gently cleanse your hair with this TrioMy hair is definitely in need of moisturising so I was keen to see what we’d be getting. The box contained the Indola Innova Hydrate Pack and consisted of:

 – Indola Innova Hydrate Shampoo, 300ml (RSP R179,00)

This is described as a gentle shampoo that can be used daily to cleanse and moisturise hair. The formula contains sweet almond oil and provitamin B5 which work together to rehydrate hair and improve shine and strength.

– Indola Innova Hydrate Bi-Phase Conditioner, 250ml (RSP R179,00)

This product is formulated with bamboo extract, pro-vitamin B5, hydrolysed wheat protein and other ingredients to restore and repair hair. This is also a leave in spray conditioner that softens and moisturises dry and brittle hair.

– Indola Innova Hydrate Light Treatment, 200ml (R207)

This treatment contains bamboo milk and works deep into the shaft where it restores the natural moisture balance.

Since blogging, I’ve taken note of the key ingredients in my shampoo and conditioner and I don’t recall trying anything that contains bamboo milk or bamboo extract, so I’m eager to see what this does for my hair.

The box also came with a nifty quilted travel bag that I think will be great for travelling with your hair products OR even as use for a makeup bag. #JustSaying….. All roads lead back to makeup. lol.

All in all the box totals R565 for the items and I’d add on another R80 perhaps for the travel bag, so the box is worth about R645. The Secret Box 31 is still available here for R350, and apparently blondes do have more fun, as this is a box aimed at them 😉

Have you ever bought a Secret Box before? If not, you really should get your hands on one!

colab_lux-shine_rt_light-back_rgb_hires-1COLab Luxe Shine Spray is infused with a nourishing blend of precious oils, silk extracts & shimmering diamond dust. Diamond dust?? Doesn’t that sound fabulous! This luxurious feather-light mist adds a touch of silken gloss, smoothing and illuminating your hair.

The fragrance is deeply sensual with notes of Cashmere, Bergamot and Oud. The COLab Luxe Shine spray gives an indulgent finish, straight from the can.

This glossing hair fragrance is available at selected Clicks stores and retails for R129,95.

Let me know if you’ve spotted this or even if you’ve used it yet. I can’t wait to try it out.

{Hair care} Let’s get Noughty

Curly hair problem #298 – You have two styling options: Ponytail and bun.

This is definitely the story of my life. Maybe our curly hair problems will be a thing of the past once Noughty’s hair care range hits the shelves?

I was so excited to hear about the new Noughty 97% Natural hair care range that will be hitting the shelves at Clicks later this month. As a ‘coloured’ gal, I know the struggle of hair that’s not straight enough, not curly enough, so it fills my heart with warm fuzzy feelings to know that there’s a hair care range coming, that wants you to embrace your natural hair.

Whether you want to fight frizz, battle product build-up or simply define those curls, Noughty haircare products are designed to make a real difference to your locks and are suitable for all hair types including extensions.

These products are made in the UK and contain high quality ingredients such as coconut oil, olive oil, sea kelp, blue mallow flower and argan oil. Noughty’s natural ingredients pack a punch, for hair that feels and smells as good as it looks. Plus it’s gentle enough for the whole family and very affordable. As a mom of 3, and especially with a 7 year old daughter with A LOT of curly hair on her head, this is music to my ears.

I love the addition of argan oil in hair care products I use for myself or for my daughter. It’s really nourishing and has the ability to soften the hair and treat split ends. The ingredient I’m most excited about though, is the blue mallow flower, and I promise it has nothing to do with the fact that it’s related to the ‘Marsh Mallow flower’. The blue mallow flower’s botanical name is Malva Sylvestiris and it apparently has anti inflammatory properties, so this will really soothe the scalp. My daughter has a very sensitive scalp, so this may be a great addition to her hair care regime.

A huge trend in hair and beauty now is to use products that are cruelty free, and here Noughty is on point, as they don’t use any animal derived ingredients, so their products are suitable for vegetarians and vegans AND they do not believe in testing any of their ingredients on Bambi, Lassie or Skippy. Isn’t that great? The products are also FREE from petrochemicals, parabens, sulphates and silicones.

There’s a variant for all hair types:

  • Rise and shine – Normal or dry hair
  • Care taker – Dandruff or sensitive scalps
  • To the rescue – Frizzy damaged hair
  • Wave hello – Curly or wavy hair
  • Detox dynamo – Detoxing or removing product build up

The new Noughty haircare range will be launching in selected Clicks stores nationwide from September. It will retail at R149,95 for 250mls.

Are you excited to try out anything from this range? I’m definitely keen to try ‘Care taker’ and ‘To the rescue’.

#RBSecretBox 26 Unboxing

I’ve been waiting for the Secret Box to launch this month as I noticed I’m running low on hair care products. What I love about the secret box is that it makes high end hair products available to us at half the price. Products I never would have bought off the bat, due to not knowing if the money is justified or not.

So when a new box is released, there’s always a little clue as to what the product is and what type of hair it’s suitable for. This month it was for colour treated hair, which mine isn’t, but I plan to colour my hair soon, so I had to get it. I had a feeling it was going to be from the Nak Aromas range, just because I’ve been seeing it all over social media lately…..So…was I right? Let’s see….

Ding ging ding…it appears I was 🙂

In the box I received the Nak Aromas Colour Shampoo and Conditioner. They came in a little bag, with an information booklet on all their products and then finally the bottles are inside this pretty floral box. They made sure you really wanted this product to go through the actual secret box, the bag, another box…..ha ha.  It was very pretty and added a bit of a luxurious feel to it…I’ve never gotten my shampoo and conditioner in a box and bag before 🙂

What RetailBox says:

Nak Aromas Colour Shampoo 275ml (RSP R320)

Nurture colour treated hair and scalp in a rich luxurious lather of natural Botanicals. Preserves colour, adds shine and protects the hair. sulphate free . paraben free . preserve colour . shine . protect Apply to wet hair, massage gently into hair and scalp, rinse well and repeat if necessary. Key Ingredients Argan Oil, Lavender, Patchouli and Geranium.

Nak Aromos Colour Conditioner 275ml (RSP R320)

Vegan Friendly Shampoo: Nurture colour treated hair and scalp in a rich luxurious lather of natural Botanicals. sulphate free . paraben free . cleanse . tone . moisturise Apply to clean wet hair, massage from roots to tips, leave for 1-3 minutes, rinse throughly. Designed for coloured hair Key Ingredients Argan Oil, Lavender, Patchouli and Geranium.

So the rage is Sulphate free and paraben free, etc. I’ve been a bit weary of these as I find that the shampoo doesn’t foam like good ol fashioned shampoo, where you could make you hair into this bubbly mohawk back in the day? I needed to wash my hair on the day I received these, so I’m able to do a very quick first impressions as well.

First Impressions

The packaging is nice and ‘clean/crisp’. They are white bottles with writing on them….there’s just something about white that kind of ups the look of anything. The shampoo smells really great, not overpowering. I get a hint of lavender, but it’s really subtle.

Okay… this shampoo foams really nicely! I didn’t need to use a cheap shampoo to feel like my hair was clean. It also didn’t leave my hair feeling ‘squeaky’….I’m not quite sure what the term is…but you know when shampoo kind of strips your hair and it feels really…not nice? My hair felt so soft and even more so after the conditioner.

What really sells me on this range is that it’s formulated to prepare your hair for heat styling. So if you’re out of heat protector spray or balm, this has something to help.

Also it contains Argan Oil. Argan oil is rich in Vitamin E and fatty acids. It is apparently really good for dry or damaged hair, it is said to promote growth, assists with brittle hair and split ends. So all in all….fantastic for your hair!

My hair felt really soft and sleek after I blow dried it. I was really impressed. I’m battling with my front hair that I lost after having my 3rd child (almost a year ago). I went completely bald in front. To combat the regrowth that stands high like a lion’s mane, I ended up gelling it down, causing it to then break off again. So I’m hoping this shampoo and conditioner combo will assist with my hair troubles:(  I actually chopped off my really long hair a week ago, and feeling some remorse as the hairstylist did an awful job with the cut. So I really need a pick me up in terms of my hair soon.

To add, I also used this on my daughter’s hair and her hair was so soft and shiny. This morning it has a lovely bounce to it. I’m definitely loving this range just from the 1st use.

Lastly, because I HATE shipping fees, I added the Matrix Fiberstrong Fortifying Cream (RSP R210).

Matrix Biolage Fiberstrong Fortifying Cream is daily leave-in treatment conditions to leave hair feeling reinforced and touchably soft. Features: – Enriched with Bamboo extract and Intra-Cylane. – Creamy texture. – Fortifies and conditions. – Leaves hair feeling reinforced and touchably soft.

I like that this can be used as a daily ‘moisturiser’ for your hair and mainly plan to use it for my daughter’s hair, but I think I’ll also use it on these pesky regrowth hairs and hope it will speed the process up and protect the hairs as they attempt to grow back…run Forest run……

There are still boxes left here on Retail Box and they are selling for R299. Hurry if you want to grab one 🙂
