Is anybody feeling Sili?

Somebody asked me if blogging was expensive and I said yes it is. You always want to keep up with the trends, review products and try to help your readers make informed decisions. That being said, what works for me, may not work for you and vice versa. Buying even budget brands like Essence and LA Girl tally up when you get to the cashier to pay for your goodies. So at some point I had to draw the line and be like, okay so there’s no Colourpop shipment coming in this week….no new brands, you’re broke…what now? One needs to start getting creative, recycle your makeup, expand your horizons and maybe explore different topics. If I could, I’d own every holiday edition makeup item, but I am not exactly sure where I am able to sell my kidney to make that happen.

Once in a while though, there’s a new trend or new item that takes the world by storm, that you just have to have, and you get the kidney buyers lined up to make it happen. The SiliSponge however is NOT that for me. The beauty pages and the internet is going crazy for the SiliSponge, but i just don’t see myself intrigued by it. I reckon if I feel my BeautyBlender does a good job with my foundation, why do I need one more item to clutter up my makeup space? Okay, so what is the SiliSponge?

It’s basically the equivalent of a bra insert/booster made of silicone. The SiliSponge doesn’t soak up any product, it’s easy to clean and apparently applies your foundation like a dream. Like I said, the internet is going nuts for this and as a result it’s sold out and restocked like crazy!

I just am not feeling this one…. what next? The heel of my shoe to contour? A chicken breast to highlight? If you go to YouTube you’ll find quite a few reviews on the SiliSponge already and even a comparison to the BeautyBlender, so search away if you’d like to see it in action and perhaps decide if this is something you want to try.

Will you be getting silly with the SiliSponge? Am I missing out?

PS Picture taken off the world wide web.

PSS If I have a blog post in the future titled: Wow I love my SiliSponge….throw a chicken breast at me please. ha ha

Friday’s Yay or Nay?

So whether you thought this ‘series’ of posts was a good idea or not, you know, it’s my blog, so I don’t really care. I think it’s a good idea, so I’ll go with it. lol. Just kidding….I’m writing this in advance, so I really hope somebody thought this was a good idea…or I guess I’ll be trashing the 5 Friday posts I have lined up 😦

Assuming the idea was well received, let’s get to this week’s pick…..

This week I’m talking about a super impulsive and expensive buy, it’s the Smashbox Always Sharp Clear Lip Liner.

Stop lipstick from stepping out of line with our new clear lip liner. Inspired and engineered to work with our new shades of Be Legendary lipstick. With a see-through finish, reds retain their vibrancy and pinks don’t lose their pop. Plus, a transparent lip liner is universal and works with every skin tone—and you can apply it without a mirror. This liner glides on easily to define lips and create a barrier that prevents lipstick from feathering and bleeding. Think of it as a fool-proof primer for your pout and the perfect partner for any lipstick in your makeup bag.

What attracted me to this liner:

  • It’s from Smashbox……<3
  • A clear liner is essentially a universal liner, so no more rummaging through 20 different pencils looking for the perfect liner.
  • It has a ‘twist and it’s sharp’ mechanism in the cap, so I thought that was pretty cool. You’d never need a sharpener again!
  • It had just come out, so I wanted to be ahead of the pack. You know, my pack of one.

Okay so what do I think? At R255 for a liner that, to me, doesn’t extend the wear of my lipstick, what do you think I think? I think I just tossed money down the drain. I never even reach for this lip liner. I choose to rummage through my 20 Essence lip pencils instead, that together cost me what this one liner cost me.

If I think of using it as a primer and a liner that prevents bleeding, then I think it’s fine, but definitely not a must have in your makeup bag, and definitely not for that price, so it’s a nay from me unfortunately.

Have you used this before? What’s your favourite lip liner?

Friday’s yay or nay?

I like to purchase random items….my whole family will just collectively do an eye roll and mock me straight up about some of my purchases that get delivered. I was an unemployed student back in the VERY LATE 90’s…an infomercial’s dream viewer. The amount of crap I got my poor dad to buy…oh bless him. So I had an idea where I thought Fridays could be about some of these items that I just can’t stop myself from buying…a ‘Yay or Nay’ series and I’d give it a rating depending on how I felt about the item. Good idea…bad idea?

Seeing as you can’t actually reply,  let’s jump into our first ‘Yay or Nay’……….

When I saw this being advertised, I knew that I would be all over it, like white on rice! Judging from the amount of times I got tagged on posts advertising this, it appears that my friends also know me very well. A nail polish bottle holder??? Why was this not invented sooner???

I LOVE to paint my nails. I love to add glitter, polka dots, heck I’d put the kitchen sink on my nails if I could….the crazier, the better. If you’re a fan of DIY nail painting at home, you know the struggle one faces when trying not to drip the polish all over the floor, bedding, your lap or table. It’s a real real problem. #ThirdWorldProblems. So when I saw this, I knew that the nail polish gods were smiling somewhere, because this has to be the perfect solution…..or is it?

Off the bat…..I  love the bright colour…it’s hot pink, what’s not to love? This particular brand also comes in a  beautiful minty aqua colour. This holder is super cute and the bright colour makes me smile.

You can see that there are 2 knuckle buster type holes at the bottom, and that’s so you can slide the holder onto 2 fingers. You then have the nail polish right above the nails you want to paint, so it essentially eliminates that ‘where am I going to put the bottle to give me enough time to swoop across to my fingers without dripping all over’ problem I end up having. This definitely helps me, because I love to paint my nails at night in bed after the kids are asleep. I do think this is better suited to when you’re painting your nails on a flat surface like a table or a desk, because I find with no firm surface, I tend to have no control over my hand and end up swaying my hand sideways, which I’m guessing could cause the nail polish to run out or perhaps even cause the bottle to fall out, which would be a nightmare. This didn’t happen, but I felt like a drunk person that had to keep remembering to pretend I’m sober and walk on a straight line. You all remember those days right? *insert embarrassed face emoticon* The bottle doesn’t budge though, despite how intoxicated my hand is, so that’s great.

Also it’s a bit bulky on your hand, so I have to literally peep over the holder to see my nails that I want to paint. I was wondering if they couldn’t make this a bit smaller, but if I consider how big a Morgan Taylor bottle is, to ensure it fits all brands of nail polish, this is the size it needs to be. I do just think it’s something I have to get used to.

I tried quite a few different bottle sizes and shapes and they all fit perfectly, which is great.

To me, I think it just takes a bit of practice to get used to having this holder on your fingers. All in all I think it’s a great innovative addition to the home manicure process. So it’s a YAY for me on this one and I don’t regret purchasing it.
